Outfit: A Frock in the Fog

So, when you’re thinking of the perfect backdrop for some outfit photos, the last thing you’re thinking of is swirling mist, right? I mean, the idea is that you can actually SEE the dress you’re photographing! So fog so thick you can’t see more than a few metres around you isn’t really ideal! And yet, here I am, with a set of outfit shots taken in swirling mist. What can I say? I like a challenge…..

Swirling mist obviously wasn’t the backdrop we were planning on when we set out on this day, our second full day in Somerset. We had woken up expecting glorious sunshine, and everything pointed to us being right. The forecast was predicting mid 20 degree temperatures, the sky was a brilliant blue and the sun was streaming through the chink in the curtains, making it one of those rare occasions where I actually felt like voluntarily getting out of bed (seriously, it normally only happens on holidays and Christmas morning…) So what better thing to do than head to the beach? Come on, you know how excited I get about seeing the sea. And outfit photos at the seaside?? It seemed like the perfect opportunity to get some shots of the gorgeous Uma dress I purchased from Lindy Bop in the Spring (I feel the need to point out here that I didn’t pack nothing but Lindy Bop for this trip…) Uma is basically just Matilda (seen here and here) with little sleeves, so obviously there isn’t much I need to say about why I love this dress, except for the white and pink floral print which is just stunning. Of all my Lindy Bops, this is probably the one that feels most like an authentic vintage dress, and I always feel a little ‘Rockabilly’ in it, but not in a way that makes me feel like I’m wearing fancy dress, which always makes me feel a little self conscious.

Anyway, onto the mist. Yeah – wasn’t expecting that when we arrived at Brean beach! I had found it weird on the drive over that I couldn’t see the sea anywhere, despite seeing signs that told us it was a mere couple of miles away. I assumed maybe the land was just pretty flat around here or something, but no. We quickly realised there was more to it than that. Particularly as we pulled onto the beach and the parking attendant said, ‘Welcome to Brean Fog! Enjoy!’ Apparently it was down to freak weather conditions that occur when cool air passes over the warm water, and I’m not kidding when I say it was the thickest fog I’ve ever experienced. It was real Walking Dead kinda fog, where out of nowhere people just appear about 10 feet away from you when you think you’re alone. I was genuinely keeping an eye out for zombies. So I didn’t get to see the sea, and I didn’t get quite the outfit shots I was planning, but it was definitely an experience I won’t forget, and we had the best day. The only thing I was a bit narked about was that on a day where everyone else was lazing in the sun, I was prancing around in decidedly chilly conditions! I did eventually get some sunshine that evening though once we got back and cooked ourselves a BBQ, which made up for it.

Still, the end result was pretty atmospheric, no?
